# Oil prices fall as traders hope for diplomatic progress in Middle East
Crude oil prices declined on Tuesday as markets gained hope of diplomatic progress between the U.S. and Iran, despite continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 1.8% to $101.79 per barrel, while Brent crude declined 0.7% to $108.79 per barrel. Prices retreated sharply from intraday highs as expectations of possible de-escalation outweighed some immediate supply concerns.
However, the global crude market remains tight, with escalating attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, reduced Middle East export volumes, and strikes on Saudi oil infrastructure supporting prices. Expectations of lower U.S. commercial oil inventories are also contributing to market tightness. Accordingly, while diplomatic developments could ease prices, continued supply disruptions and geopolitical risks remain key upside risks for crude oil.
